Our Story
A bloke, a bargain, and a very overpriced rump
It started, as these things do, with a bad steak and a worse bill.
One ordinary Thursday, our founder, a lifelong steak devotee who has never once let a porterhouse pass without scrutiny, sat down at a pub and ordered a 300g sirloin. It arrived grey at the edges, dwarfed by its own plate, and accompanied by a bill that could have fed a small wedding. Two suburbs over, a humble bowling club was quietly serving a thicker, juicier cut of the same grade for barely half the price. Same cow, roughly. Wildly different wallet.
That injustice gnawed at him. He began keeping notes: first on a beer coaster, then a battered notebook, eventually a spreadsheet that grew its own gravity. Date nights became reconnaissance missions. Mates stopped asking “where should we eat?” because they already knew he’d produce a ranked, colour-coded answer sorted by dollars per hundred grams. He measured. He weighed. He once politely asked a chef the exact gram weight of the eye fillet and was, briefly, asked to leave.
The maddening truth he kept running into was this: the price of a pub steak in Sydney has almost nothing to do with how good, or how big, it is. One venue charges a fortune for a thin, sauce-less slab; another down the road plates up a generous, perfectly-cooked scotch with chips, salad and a free peppercorn sauce for less. Nobody was keeping score. So he decided to.
HighSteaksis the result: every steak he could find across Sydney’s pubs, clubs and hotels, weighed and priced and ranked by the only number that actually matters when you’re hungry and value-conscious: the price per 100 grams. Cuts, weights, sides, sauce policies, member prices, weekly specials. All of it, in one place, so you can find a cracking steak without funding someone’s beachfront renovation.
We’re not affiliated with any of these venues. We don’t take their ads and we don’t take their freebies. We just love a great steak, we can’t abide a rip-off, and we think you deserve to know the difference before you sit down.
Now go get yourself a proper feed, for a fair price.
